MY PERSONAL JOURNEY with Bufo Alvarius aka The Toad Medicine
As I have heard said in the medicine space “Sometimes the Medicine Finds You.” I can honestly say I was not looking for anything. I had a decent amount of completion and integration in my life, but when the offer for a Bufo Alvarius Ceremony came It was an immediate yes. In fact, with no knowledge of the medicine, I encouraged another friend to partake. I barely read the information that had been sent to me and I looked up nothing about the Medicine online. It was not a mystical moment, but I was open. It was perfect.
My facilitator was thoughtful and thorough with an introduction call and plenty of space to connect in person before receiving the medicine. I didn’t realize how helpful that was until I met others who followed no best practices. The learning in this space has been vast, challenging and extremely clarifying. Thank you. Thank You. At my first “meeting” with Bufo, I was hardly able to take the medicine. There seemed to be a strong yet silent reluctance. I was there, I was not nervous, but my brain could not seem to wrap itself around how to inhale the medicine. The irony of this is that I had been a long time cannabis smoker from my early teens and my nickname was the human vacuum in high school, so I felt very at home and happy smoking. It was just all new. My facilitator was patient and slow. I had an intense moment where I thought I should just leave. This was not happening for me and felt like I could not move forward. But, then I realized that I was there and had signed up to do this and should proceed. The medicine was administered in a few doses - one as a “handshake” dose to test your response to the medicine and check for any precautions. Bufo is an incredibly safe medicine, but everyone reacts to the medicine differently in each session. I had an uplifting experience and mostly channeled messages from people who had passed whose presence I felt in the space. I left in a clear, but somewhat unaffected way, but I actually was not unaffected as within one month I was traveling to Mexico to spend a week at a Bufo Retreat Center. That was one of the most intense weeks of my life. It broke me open in ways I never imagined and it was clear that this would be a medicine I would carry and cherish - both in Mexico and back on Nantucket. It took me a lot of time to travel on this path to feel the next steps that eventually came when I moved to Mexico for 6 months in October of 2023. I have sat many many times with Bufo with many facilitators, shamans and guides and felt some of the darkest and most beautiful moments of my life and had pretty much stopped teaching publicly to focus on my own healing and call to this work. It took me over a year of time to fully find the offering that I wanted to create with this medicine. This gift, This beauty. This Level of Trust is the most potent connection I have found. It is not for everyone, but for those who answer the call, I am honored to be a connection.
Bufo Alvarius is also known as Sapo or The Toad Medicine. The compound is 5 MEO-DMT - and it is also known as the God Molecule. Unlike DMT (Ayahuasca) - 5 MEO- DMT is smoked where it creates an immediate and deep response in the brain and body. The medicine is harvested from the gland of the Toad during Monsoon and Mating Season. The animal is not harmed in this process and the Toad replenishes the secretion which has been harvested through the extraction. Proper Harvesting does not remove all of the Venom for the toads safety from predators.
THE EXPERIENCE
The Bufo Experience is very sacred, unique and expansive- and no two experiences are alike. You can experience past lives, connect with ancestors, have intuitive visions about your future, and in some cases release, eliminate and come to peace with old traumas. One of the most potent aspects of Bufo is that its vibration is Pure Love and Bliss. You may travel through darkness in a ceremony, but in the end as you integrate the medicine (and with proper preparation and dosage), you will experience a heightened sense of Universal Love and greater connection to your true blissful essence. And this essence is one of profound love, freedom and joy.

Bufo works on a multi-dimensional level and transformative way with many benefits when experienced in a safe and supportive setting. The key to receiving Bufo is allowing yourself to surrender and trust the experience. The medicine can work deeply with your past, give you insights about your own healing and access traumas and release them with an open heart. It is very likely to be an extremely beneficial step in addiction cessation or interuption. The process can be a state of deep physical euphoria and you can experience strong mystical effects. In clinical studies and assessments it was found to be a likely cause of rapid and sustained reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. It also stimulates neuroendocrine function, immunoregulation, and anti‐inflammatory processes, which may contribute to changes in mental health outcomes (Reckweg, Uthaud, Szabo, 2022).
HOW WILL BUFO HELP ME?
The experience of Bufo is like walking through a mystical and magnificent portal. This portal also contains a tremendous amount of neuro-plasticity and anti-inflammatory benefits (mind and body). Your Bufo experience will be only one aspect as you take time to integrate the medicine on a physical, spiritual and emotional level. You may notice yourself wanting to create healing changes on your own. The medicine opens a doorway to yourself and then you make the choices of how you want to move forward. Medicine is a beautiful catalyst for change, but ultimately you choose your own path forward. The more time you take to integrate and interrupt old behaviors, the longer lasting the experience will be. You may notice less physical body aches and pains and less mental anguish, but you will be activated to continue your journey. This means that the medicine can bring your attention to places that need light and love. It is not light and love from someone else guiding you. The medicine will help guide you and open deeply intuitive aspects of your awareness through the activation of the Pineal Gland. Your peak experience will be one of the most healing spaces you enter in this lifetime. Be open, Trust and Allow and the space will be there for you - just as it is meant to be.
How should I prepare?
Come clean, Please. Reduce coffee and tea (caffeine), stop using cannabis at least 72 hours ahead, limit tobacco, heavy red meat and pork, social media, television, and ejaculation. Do your best to move away from toxic habits, people, places and foods. Hydrate yourself well all week and abstain from: mind-altering substances, pharmaceutical medications, and alcohol. Deepen your connection to your favorite practices like journaling, meditation, breathwork, movement, nature, and gratitude.
If you are taking medications, this will need to be discussed for your own safety. Bufo Alvarius is a powerful, yet very safe medicine, but has distinct contra-indications with SSRIs and other pharmaceuticals.

Day of Ceremony
Fast (No Food, Water and Beverages) for least 6 hours - Small Sips of Water are fine.
Take time for all activities - a walk, slow shower or bath or swim in the ocean.
Wear All White If possible. No Short Dresses or Revealing Clothes. Remove Jewelry.
If you have something special you want to wear or bring, please do. Crystals, Photographs and Momentos may be helpful.
Keep the rest of your day open. It is best not to have anything else booked. You may be inspired to connect with others - but time in nature and in reflection can be the most potent ally. Avoid loud noises and things like a supermarket. Bufo creates a heightened awareness internally and externally.
Your facilitator will offer these ceremonies aka sacred meditations with tremendous respect and care for the portal that is Bufo Alvarius. There is nothing random or haphazard about us being on this path. Your facilitator holds this medicine with deep respect and gratitude and has found their own way, with many teachers - both human, spirit, plant and animal to support many years of learning. The Bufo Alvarius facilitator is not a Shaman nor a Guide. They are there to hold space for the tremendous opening that is The God Molecule. They do this with their own training, deep connection to the medicine and our own time to integrate the messages and wisdom that they have received along the way. Their movements in your space are limited and gentle - allowing the medicine to move through you and with you. Each ceremony allows ample space for each part - the opening (meeting time, connection and intention), receiving the medicine (this can last up to 2 hours) and closing (time to connect with the facilitator and time alone nearby for self-reflection). Requests can be made for music, location and their level of engagement. As Bufo can activate the physical body, they will be there to keep you physically safe in the case of movement or purgation. This helps avoid an imprinted connection with the facilitator and aims to keep the recipient connected most to the medicine space.
How is Bufo served and How long does the experience last?
The Bufo Medicine is received through a tube via vapor that travels from a glass bulb to a long silicone tube. This allows the medicine to cool down slightly to avoid overheating the throat and it also slows down the process greatly. This slow process allows you to inhale the medicine until you feel full and hold the medicine. You will begin to feel the vibration of the medicine working almost immediately and the subsequent space you enter can last up to two hours. It is deeply meditative as you finish the experience and come back to the present, so the facilitator’s role will be to maintain that quiet and internal space as long as they can. They allow 3 hours from start to finish. The medicine is usually served in one or two doses and this will be discussed prior to the ceremony. This is based on the experience and needs of the recipient.

Bufo Alvarius creates an opening for new patterns and pathways. You can best sustain this by having a conscious practice and allowing yourself to go within by adding a new pattern like yoga, breathwork, writing and meditation. Try something new.
It is not about overhauling your whole life. What matters?
It is also very beneficial to spend time alone and in nature. Be mindful of the spaces you enter and visual imprints like TV, Social Media and Toxic Conversations like Gossip. The medicine can give you some re-activations in the following days and weeks. These re-activations are powerful and the perfect opportunity to continue to do the deep work. When you experience this, please go to a place of trust as you did in your ceremony. This activation is simply a process of integration and it will pass. Don’t rush it.
